Figure skating is not a sport. I mean that honestly. Really. It isn’t. It’s a great show of human accomplishment, but it’s not a sport. Oh sure, it might have been one at one point, but that classification dissolved once they imposed a few questionable requisites on the pastime, namely: costumes, music, and smiling.
Deep down in my very soul (!!!), I always believed that figure skating lacked the fundamentals that make a sport a sport, but I could never really convince myself of an adequate reason why. Last week, I read an article in The Sun about the Winter Olympics and how its appeal to the general masses seems to be dwarfed by the glory that its summertime counterpart entertains. It’s no surprise really.
Though more of a sport than figure skating, skiing is so widely accepted as a recreational diversion that few can realistically accept the addition of little colored flags as a worthy component of the sport’s technical design. Now, bobsledding is fast and partially exhilirating to watch, and we’re all sure it’s adrenaline-pumping for the competitors, but the fact that all these so-called sports rely so much on gravity leaves us wishing there was more responsibility left to the athlete himself.
I invite you to challenge me on these points, but it should be noted that I myself participate in one of the most extreme cases of Sports-That-Aren’t-Really-Sports. I breakdance.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
