Here are a few things that fancied my interest this week:
XKCD comic #438. This particular strip illustrates everything that I think is wrong with how people behave on the Web. The comic is very reminiscent of a more general psychological problem that occurs when people assume a pattern of decreased “social integrity” when interacting with others in a non-face-to-face environment. The lack of facial cues and body language is one of many reasons why these unboundedly hostile encounters take place.
David Shea of Mezzoblue recently redesigned his business site, Bright Creative, and I think the work he has done with it is fantastic. I haven’t really taken the time to look over his mark up and styling, but the visual impression I got from first viewing the page was inspiring. Shea has a unique command of colors, in that he seems to be able to create rich and exciting color schemes out of the less vibrant and more pastel-like shades. I’m pretty impressed and am somewhat motivated to perform a redesign of simonlife sometime soon as well. =)

I definitely agree with that XKCD comic. It’s depressing; I still want to believe in the power of the internet to bring people together and have them share their thoughts in a way that was never before possible. But then you see them try and then watch what happens in forums, and you just have to ask yourself, “Is this what humanity is?”
XKCD in general is equal parts hilarious and insightful.
